According to Ready.Gov, a small flame that ignites in the home can become a major fire in as little as 30 seconds. To prevent this from occurring, it’s important to be aware where fires are most likely to start, including the following areas:
1. Chimneys and fireplaces. Amenities like chimneys and fireplaces, when not cleaned regularly or poorly maintained, can cause in-home fires to become too hot. This may send burning embers and hot ash into the interior spaces of a home, increasing the likelihood of a fire.
2. The kitchen. A majority of home fires begin in the kitchen. This can be attributed to carelessness of inattentive cooks, dirty stovetops heaped with grease, and the number of appliances that rely on heat and electricity to function. Appliances like dishwashers, microwaves, and toasters pose electrical fire risks when old, damaged, or left unattended while in operation.
3. The bedroom. One of the reasons the bedroom poses such a fire risk is the number of flammable materials traditionally found in this room, including bedding, curtains, and plush décor. Additionally, any mattress made before the year 2007 likely does not meet the standards for federal mattress flammability.
